Collaborative Project

June 3, 2011. 3 hours.
Today I met up with Mikaela and Katie to try and iron out the details of our CAS project. We knew that we wanted to work with the Friends of the Orphans organization, but we were unsure of how to construct a project that would allow us to do so. Friends of the Orphans is an international group dedicated to housing, schooling, and shaping the lives of children in need. They have several homes in various countries such as Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, etc. Our goal is to have several parties, each with a different focus, which will raise money for this organization. Today we called several companies to see if we could host parties and give the profits to an outside organization of our choice. So far we have been able to confirm that PartyLite, 31 bags, and Avon would be willing to donate a significant portion of the profits to Friends of the Orphans. We are thinking that we will start with PartyLite some time near the beginning of the school year and then have a second party using one of the other companies some time during the spring.

Mikaela, Katie, and I all met up with our advisor, Kristen, to inform her of our plans about the project. She was very helpful in giving us ideas for the time period which would be best for our parties, since we don't want to coincide with holidays like Christmas. Our project is becoming more clear. We decided to divvy out roles to ourselves for the first party. Roles will change for the second gathering; however,  for now I am in charge of the advertising aspect of the project. I will need to create some sort of flyer and spread the word about the PartyLite fundraiser. We decided to have the party at Mikaela's house for convenience. Kristen will bring informational packets about the organization. Overall, I think the project is coming together nicely.

October 9, 2011.  2 hours.
After collaborating with Mikaela and Katie earlier about possible dates for the first party to take place, we finally decided upon October 21, 2011. Today I spent time composing a flyer for the party and sending out emails to prospective attendants, making sure to include all the pertinent information. I've enjoyed this leadership role, because it has given me an opportunity to reach out to people and inform them of a worthy cause. Below is my flyer and the email that was sent:
 "Hello all,

I am sending you this to invite you to one of three parties that I will be hosting along with my two other project cohorts, Mikaela Raffle and Katie Bateman. This is our collaborative project for the IB program. It was required that we come up with a project that dealt with world issues in which we all could have differing leadership roles. We decided to hold mini fundraisers for the organization, Friends of the Orphans, in the hopes that we can help make a difference in the lives of these abandoned children. The proceeds from the two other parties which will be held later in the year will also go towards Faces of Hope. This particular party will be affiliated with Party Lite, and more information is available on the attached flyer. For those of you who will not be able to make the party, you can still make a participate to help the cause. If you go to the Party Lite website link below, click "look up your host", and type Mikaela Raffle into the host name box, you may shop the Party Lite catalog. Thank you so much for your help! It's greatly appreciated!
