Honors Society

My roles in honors society has changed drastically over my junior year. I have been an honors society member for three years and am now not only a member but the vice president as well. To be in honors society one must maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher and complete a specific number of community service hours requirements each year. Basically, it pushes me to focus on my grades and helping others at the same time which I find to be a very worthy group to be a part of. Although CAS is meant to help IB members become well-rounded, I find that honors society helped me do before I even became a part of IB.

October 15, 2010. Homecoming Carnival. 3 hours.
For this event I helped set up for the carnival itself, and helped run the booth for honors society. Our booth was dedicated to throwing pies at various faculty members as well as a few Sumner High students. I helped to create the pies and handle the tickets. It was really fun to greet new people and be a part of the Sumner community. I learned how to adequately run a carnival event (which I had never done) and that the simple, small community of Sumner is really close-knit. Towards the end of the carnival, I was able to pie a few people guiltlessly for my own pleasure which also made the occasion memorable. I also stayed after the carnival to help clean up [because very few members stayed to help], so I missed the beginning portion of the homecoming football game.

Both an IB History and IB English teacher took part in being one big mess of whip cream. Oh the joy.

My student teacher for IB English, Mr. Phalon, pied by me. It was a proud moment.

October 28, 2010. Walk around conferences. 2.5 hours.
The "Open House" or walk around conferences were delightful! I got a chance to stroll around with a food cart while wearing fancy attire and trying to nourish the starving teachers. Who wouldn't want to partake in that? Not to mention I was able to hold some stimulating conversations with a few parents and staff members that I normally would not have had the opportunity to do so with. I discovered that I may enjoy feeding the homeless at some point over the next two years, because I really take pleasure in mingling with new people and making sure that they are cared for appropriately. I had swim practice practically right before conferences, so I had to rush home quickly and change like a mad man, but I made it! Overall I enjoyed feeding the array of famished adults even if I did wreak of chlorine.
